The exhibition Light Your Fires plays on the following sentiment, expressed in 2008 by Rósa Ingólfsdóttir  in an interview with Morgunblaðið: “women are and should be beautiful”. Here, beauty is found in ugliness, roughness and taboos. The beauty of everyday rebellion. The beauty of brazenly stepping into the world of the unique. Equality is heirloom china and a cream cake. Lace tablecloths and a sip of tea. Guests are invited to sit at the table and experience the beautiful, rotten, different, exhausted and chaotic. Vagina Power wants to talk to you. To play. To change you.  Or not. Love or hate us. We don’t care, one way or the other.

“Performance Art group Vagina Power wants audiences to
overturn their everyday normality and light up their passions”

Vagina Power is an electro-punk performance art group located in Iceland. Vagina Power uses feminist ideology, menacing imagery in everyday locations, repetitive electronic music, everyday soundscapes and vulgar language for video and mixed media art installations, creating provocation within a dark, challenging space. The artwork is thus multisensory, aimed at giving audiences an immersing, unsettling experience.

“We are entering a tea party where everything seems to have gone horribly wrong.”

The basic philosophy of Vagina Power is that injustice can only be uprooted through the extreme, frightening, uncomfortable and rough. True beauty and fragility lies in truthful reactions to ugliness and the uprooting of normality. Vagina Power does not need to be liked or enjoyed. Only to be interpreted and reacted to. Meaning is created by the viewer. Not the creator. Light your fires.
